Module 2: Lesson 4
Unraveling Expiration Dates
Making sense of expiration dates
If you’re confused about expiration dates, you’re not alone. These labels—"best by," "use by," "sell by"—can be inconsistent and hard to understand. It can leave you wondering whether your food is safe or if it should be thrown out.
While there are efforts to create a standardized labeling system, with California recently making strides, we still have a long way to go. So, it's completely normal to feel uncertain about what these dates really mean.
To help, we've included a PDF with answers to common questions about expiration dates, sell-by, and best-by labels—everything you need to know about food safety. I hope this, along with Margot's video, helps clear up any confusion and makes things easier for you.

Next time we meet, we'll start with the first one: the pantry! We'll share the tools that work best in our own kitchens to keep everything running smoothly, and we'll guide you through the process of cleaning out your own.See you then!
